They also don't mention the fact that they exhibited a naked American airman in the zoo, but you know minor details and all that.

See now that would make a much more interesting lesson.
That guy's story would actually fit pretty well into the curriculum. A story about the horrors of war but also forgiveness and hope. The kind of shit that Japanese english textbook writers eat up. Only problem is it's an American suffering because of the war instead of Japanese.
Stories/lessons that should be in the textbook: Those two Japanese soldiers who had a competition over who could behead the most Chinese people (good for learning numbers), snack bar ettiquette, the dangers of poor nuclear powerplant maintenance, why Japanese "comedy" is so bad, the dangers of alcoholism and overwork, a look at that town that slaughters dolphins and how they hunt whales for "science", and the real Ueno Zoo story.
I've been using New Crown for two years, and while it's not exactly "bad", it's boring as all fuck.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap.
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an` Tommy, 'ow's yer soul? "
But it's " Thin red line of 'eroes " when the drums begin to roll
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's " Thin red line of 'eroes, " when the drums begin to roll.
god damn hippies.
Great men of action never mind on occasion being ridiculous; in a sense it is part of their job.
I mean, if your attitude was fuck today's military, I'd have no problem... but hating on men who served to bring down the nazi and japanese fascist empires... it just kind of makes you look like a weeb who believes Japan can't do wrong or an alt-righter who wishes the fascists had won. Neither look is flattering.
Maybe she hates military in the same way that I hate gaijin hunters - she doesn't want to admit they're the only chance she has to get laid?
Oh, certainly I agree with you there. But being on the right side of history doesn't necessarily mean that the individuals themselves weren't any less boorish than the meatheads who make up its ranks today. The policies put in place during the post-war occupation and the general extravagant buffoonery going on while local people were still picking maggots out of their festering wounds (I, unfortunately, have sources for that) just rubs me the wrong way.
Obviously Japan's military would have done exactly the same had they won, but I don't like playing the "buh-buh-but he did it too" game. It's gross no matter who did it.
yeah, fuck the people providing medical care to over 100,000 people in southern Sudan! Oats has read a book about the post war occupation of Japan and met some drunk squaddies so every soul who has ever worn a uniform is a festering pile of shite.

Let's be real, Japan's military would have done much worse had they won.
Most the people who served during WWII were just the average civ and went back to average civving after the war. The standing army bloat of today didn't exist back then. So really I don't see how your attitudes towards the military applies to him, even before you take into account his entire life story which shows him to be a pretty cool dude.
Clearly you have a problem with seeing the military in a way that is not binary, oatscurryrobot.
