I went to college with someone who is currently working with Nova, he’s applying to JET this year, now I know why.

You have to imagine that when big corporations do things like this, they deliberately calculate the increased profits against the likelihood of being caught and the financial penalty they would receive (plus damage to reputation, although I must agree with nicklar that the damage in these situations tends to be negligible). It's a gamble with a higher payoff than risk.

I'm sure it's true that they've been convincing people that it is too late to cancel their contracts - that the grace period has expired. It's probably a law not known too well amongst consumers, so NOVA can get away with it. Head Office at all of the eikaiwas (and most corporations in general, I'd assume) can be pretty sketchy.

I don't, however, think NOVA was doing anything wrong in terms of returning less money than the "per lesson" remainder. If students buy in bulk to get a discount but then don't use all of the lessons, why should they still get the bulk discount? If they could, then everyone who wanted 100 lessons would just get the largest pack (600 was mentioned in the article), use 100 of them and then cancel, rather than ordering the 100 lessons.

That's the one and only point I'll defend NOVA on.

It really depends on what action the government takes. I know, for instance that NOVA's stock plummeted with this news, something like 23%. Also, i forget where...but I remember reading somewhere that the government is thinking of preventing NOVA from taking on new students for a while as well...depending on what the investigation yields.
