Default 2007 Kanji of the Year!

    「偽」です!

It's like 'tame' but it has the person radical on the side. It's also a complete bastard to write.

What would be a better kanji of the year?

I reckon 鸚鵡 - I think the Japanese should reclaim all their kanji lost to joyou and then we should gaman through them as well.

Just what Japan needs - more gaman.

And your kanji of the year?

Although I:m pretty sure I:m the only person who cares here:s a translation of some of the article from the Sanyo Shinbun anyway!

    --

The kanji that sums up the past year has been decided. This year's 'Kanji of the Year' is 偽(disguise, deception), as announced by the Kyoto based 'Kanji Kentei Society' on the 12th of this month. A ceremony was held in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto City at Kiomizu temple.

The character was selected based on nominations made to the society. They received some 90810 submissions of which 偽 accounted for 16550 (18%).

There's some other stuff in there I couldn't be bothered with but the Meathope company tricked a lot of consumers with their crappy sweets/candies and so a lot of people also voted for the kanji to be `tabemono` to reflect this.

    Super!

I cannot think of a good reason why Oumu should be the kanji of the year except that noone can write it and they should!

I don't know any kanji but I always like the one for rain

Mainly because it's the only kanji that reminds me of the actual thing. It's raindrops on a window!

This year's choice of kanji is cracking me up. "Fake"! Given that last year's kanji, "life", was apparently chosen because of a couple of major events, I have to wonder what the significance of this year's kanji is.

I watched a seg. on tv about it last night.....

there have been some pretty bad thing happen, fake is just one use, deceptive is another....

everyting from Abe screwing things up
to some big companies mislabeling food so they could sell it longer or better...like akafuku (mochi), shiroi koibito (cookies), senba kicho (japanese restaurat)
mcdonalds even mislabled some salads so they didnt throw them out and sold them for an extra day.

some of these things led to people getting sick, others were just happend on by chance, but that seems to be why they chose 偽 this year

I'm rooting for the dark horse of this year: 口

That's right people, simple is the new 50 strokes in the kanji world and 口 (kuchi) sums up everything that's great about the new Muji-like blandicious trends of 2007. This sexy square not only looks a whole lot like its meaning, it also represents a universal shape that some say could represent the Japan's increasing international interaction oft forgetten in the wake of a fingerprinting fiasco and whale baiting that has shaken the year. So here's to that little square that says love, food, chat and tetris: kuchi - 2007 salutes you!

(I definitely haven't just chosen it because it looks like the start of my name in katakana...not at all).

I've always been a big fan of 李察 in that case?

Though the square is good too.

Edit: just think of all the geeky kanji fun you can have with rooting too! 本?根?凸凹?色欲?

So not only do these guys get named and shamed in the media, they get immortalised by the Kanji of the Year. I love it!

By the way, just to show my BigDaikon side, my kanji of the year is 凹. :P

Surely it would have to be 我慢?

    Gaman?

Does anyone know how to write this kanji off the top of their head?

I know the ga becaue it's the same (except for the pronunciation) in Chinese but the man? What an arsey kanji!

Edit: Come to think of it:

    我慢
    難しい
    迷惑
    頑張る

are all the sorts of kanji with strokes everywhere and just come out plain ugly when I write them. I think it's a trend.

    > I reckon 鸚鵡

    I think this 麒麟

My favourite kanji lately is this:-

I'm really good at writing it and no matter how much I try to think of it as a legible looking kanji character, all I can see is a hotel on stilts.

I think they may have confused "electricity" with "aerial view of a lion."
