Well, 雷 (ikazuchi; lightning...well, actually, thunder, too, but...) is a raincloud and a rice field. Lightning flashes between the raincloud and the rice field.

Put a tap in it, and you get 電: electricity.

Thanks for explaining the individual makeup of the kanji. Yes I know that, but again does that actually look like actual electricity like 木 does for tree?

弓 or 与 would be more fitting. But then again, 弓 fits well for bow.

I just looked at the history and realized that the origin of this discussion was whether or not den counts as pictographic.

In that case, I'm on your side, Dawg. No, I don't consider it to be pictographic. That "lightning flashes between the raincloud and the field" thing is probably not the real origin either. Maybe semi-pictographic, in that if you handwave that the top part is lightning, then arguably a wire connected to lightning is a pictographic depiction of harnessed electricity.

Personally, I'm at a loss for how you would pictographically show electricity. A lightning bolt, sure, but the concept of electricity? You could come up with some scientific diagrams, but none as obvious as "ki" for tree or "hi" for fire.

That would be so cool if they used a kanji'fied version of a lightening bolt!
