    Default 2nd year SHS class

For my second years this year, I have no text book and little direction for them. I'm having difficulty coming up with lesson plan idea's. I've already done 2 lessons on Harry Potter and 1 on music so far. So far though, I'm drawing a blank as to what to do with the kids. Any thoughts as to what to do with a low academic SHS?

I work at a low level SHS, and I just did a lesson (3 class periods) on Stereotypes that went over well. I'm also getting ready to teach them American gestures/slang/emoticons.

Just out of curiousity, what did you do for your Harry Potter Lessons? I want to do something like that with my low level SHS, but now sure how to do it.

Maybe you could try coming up with a syllabus of some kind.

It's a bit different for me, because my kids are 3nensiei at an academic(ish) school, but I'm doing 'Japan and the world' with them now.

I started off by giving them a dictionary exercise where they used their dictionaries to come up with words that described Japanese things (like symbols, people, culture) and then copied them to the board and got the kids to learn them.

Apart from talking games, I've also simplified news articles about Japan from Australia (today was one about Harajuku) and asked them questions about why they think the people dress so strange, why people from overseas are interested in the place and whether they think its a good image or not.

I'm also getting them to prepare a presentation to display Japan as a tourist destination which they can make in class and later on they can do a mini-debate.

... but yeah, anyways, main point- get all the lesson together into a single area, then it should be easier to come up with new ideas because there is a natural progression...

I hear lessons on AIDs are a popular thing to try.

    Lessons on:

    Appearance
    Personality
    Shopping
    Directions
    Taking public transport
    Going through customs/passport control
    Restaurants
    Food
    Body parts
    Health disorders
    At the doctor's
    Making appointments
    Telephone calls
    Making reservations
    Technology
    Movie/book reviews

All these topics are in the OC textbooks and you can probably find more I've forgotten - then you just need to make them into fun, or at least engaging, acitvities.

True, true. But will the undeniable validity of this question be lost on the students?...
