    Default さき vs さっき

I have great trouble using these correctly and often get them confused, any advice?

According to Jim Breen they're interchangeable when you mean "some time ago", but only "saki" is used to mean "the previous (time)."
    Does that help?

さっき refers to something that has happened just recently; the best translation is "earlier". For example:

    さっき彼はここにいたけど、今はどににいるか分からない。
"He was here earlier, but I don't know he his now"

さき refers to doing something, usually before somebody else. I'm sure you've heard お先に(おさきに)失礼します。 Literally it means "it's rude of me to go first", but it's said when leaving work before your co-workers.

Or if you're playing a board game and you're deciding who's going to go first, you can say さきどうぞ! "You first!"

さっき does mean "earlier" or "a moment ago" but is more of an informal saying, so generally it's only used with your close peeps. 先ほど(さきほど) is best used for talking to someone who isn't in your circle.

先 literally means "first" or "before". If you know what まず means then you might also notice that the kanji is 先ず meaning "first" as well.

I doubt you'll find too many girls named any form of さっき but yeah, さき is a popular one!

And you can also say 先で to mean "in the future". Dunno if you can do that with さっき. My co-workers say no.

Perfectly logical, having a word that normally means "past" be used to describe the future. -_-

先 actually normally means "ahead" not "past", therefore things like "お先に失礼します" and "お先にどうぞ" work because you're essentially going ahead of someone else. 先で literally means something "ahead" of you, so when used in reference to time, it's like saying "the time ahead of you" or the future.

    Logical? Yes.
