What is the remuneration for an ALT under the JET Program? I need to tender a rough figure in order to apply for leave to participate in JET to my superior. I am intending to apply for JET 2010. A brief breakdown of allowances or income would help much.

    Many thanks.

    Appreciate that mate!

    From the US JET website:

As employment on the JET Program is a full-time paid position, JET participants receive a monthly salary from their contracting organizations. Remuneration is approximately ¥3,600,000 a year, before Japanese income tax and resident’s taxes are deducted. Those exempt from these taxes based on a tax treaty between Japan and the participant's home country will also receive approximately ¥3,600,000 a year (see Note 7, page 12). In Japan, joining the national health insurance program, contributing to the pension fund program, and paying employment insurance
is mandatory, and a part of these costs are borne by the participant and deducted from the monthly remuneration on payday. This remuneration is sufficient to cover average living expenses in Japan.

oh you just wanna know how much you get paid? fiercestcalm's answer is correct, and that works out to roughly $36,000 a year (American). If it matters, there are no bonuses or raises throughout your stay on the program.

Congrats, can't say that I'm not jealous, but it does mean an upgrade has happened out of Portland. I wish you the best in your journey

Seeing as honta hasnt logged in for a month and I have no intention of wading through 60 pages in order to update this I'm going to unsticky it. If you get a placement post it in the 2009 placement thread.
