    Default "Peace study."

"I think peace study is very important."

    I read this and thought:

Peace study? what the hell does that mean? Studying about peace?

I told the JTE that "peace study" isn't really a term in English and you should write something more specific or descriptive. He told me that he's read the term in a bunch of English articles. So have I just missed this or what? I don't think your average English speaker is going to know what they're talking about when they say "peace study." If so, what's a reasonable translation of it?

I have heard it before. The Japanese love to talk about peace. I bet if they had not lost in WW2 they would be beating a different drum.

No, your JTE is wrong. Peace Study is not a term we use.

these English articles your JTE mentions...by chance were they written by a Japanese person?

What exactly are they trying to say anyway? The study of peace? International relations?

Peace study = noproliferation (sp?) ?
This peace study thing just bugs me. They really do need to be much more specific.

maybe peace promotion? Study seems wrong...its more an idea with the goal of encouraging more peace in the world by reminding people of the past. Like anti-war protesters have beliefs and goals. They are not studying they are acting, promoting their ideas.
Promoting seems a bit off, but closer...any other ideas for a better description out there?

Maybe he meant "peace studies"? Absolutely the worst of the humanities departments...it's like political science gave birth to a crippled baby with Downs, and then history came along and peed on it.

You might want to tell the peace and conflict studies departments at universities that, they will be terribly embarrassed to find out they have been doing it wrong all this time.

Imagine saying to someone, "I have a BA in Peace Studies."

    OH boy

That's usually what the purple-haired fauxcialist slinging drinks at the Starbucks would say to me.

"Peace Study"? "Peace Studies"? These are very strange terms to use in reference to JHS curricula. I mean, sure, maybe there's some think tank organization out there specializing in "Peace Studies", but ... huh?

What they're studying is history. It's fucking history.

If they're getting classes whose express purpose is convincing them war is bad, that's just highly normative history. (And normative in a really boring way.)

Smack your JTE upside the head for me. If nothing else, that grammar is fucked up. Studying peace?

The most I'm going to offer is,

"I think "Peace Studies" (insert kanji here) classes are very important."
