    Default Asking for help

Okay, so it's been bothering me lately, and searches aren't coming up with anything relevant for me.

How do you ask for help doing something in Japanese? Would you just use たすける? I had a sense that it was mostly used for a "rescue" sort of help, but it looks like it might work for help/assistance in a more general sense. Is there a better word, or is たすける the most common? Does it depend on what you are asking for help with (buying something vs. lifting a heavy object, for example)?

Along the same lines, how would one offer help to another person?

手伝う(てつだう)literally means "help" in terms of lending a hand, or assisting. A good way of asking help to someone is 手伝ってもらっていいですか?

It's all a bit situational but the easy version is.

TE form + くれませんか or くださいまんか
日本語を教えてくれませんか - Could you teach me Japanese?
手伝ってくださいませんか - Could you help me? (Could you give me your help?)

TE form + もらえませんか or いただけませんか
手伝ってもらえませんか - Could you help me? (Could I receive your help?)

    ----------------------

To offer help you can say, 手伝いしましょう、手伝いします、手伝ってあげる

Or if you see someone working away at something really hard and needs help you can say 手伝うことができる.....meaning you can help them with stuff.

I think you could use the causitive form here too

手伝わせてください - Please let (lit. have) me help you

手伝わせていただきます- I am going to help you (lit. I am going to receive your letting me help you)

I'm not sure if the second one is natural sounding, it is probably a bit direct, since it is harder for them to refuse the help.

You should really loudly stress the も showing off your superior knowledge of Japanese. Then use the よろしい form of いい. Get down on your knees to to ask this.

Yeah, I was referring to the colloquial way of saying it. On paper, I'd add the も but yanno...

We could get really uppity polite and say this for offering assistance:

    お手伝いさせてもよろしいでしょうか?
    "Shall I be of assistance?"

    or how about:

    お手伝いさせていただいてもよろしいでしょうか?
"Would you please allow my humble assistance?"

    or better yet:

    お手伝いさせていただきます様、お願い申し上げます。
"I humbly beg for your graceful acceptance of my assistance."

    God I love Japanese!

That's not right. Should be お手伝いしてもよろしいでしょうか.

Yeah, sorry, wasn't trying to make you look bad or anything. You seem to have a high Japanese level so I thought maybe you typo'd or something.
